Summary

Stephen Hawking, one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists in history, wrote the modern classic A Brief History of Time to help non-scientists understand fundamental questions of physics and our existence: where did the universe come from? How and why did it begin? Will it come to an end, and if so, how? Hawking attempts to deal with these questions (and where we might look for answers) using a minimum of technical jargon。 Among the topics gracefully covered are gravity, black holes, the Big Bang, the nature of time and physicists' search for a grand unifying theory。 This is deep science; the concepts are so vast (or so tiny) that they cause mental vertigo while reading, and one can't help but marvel at Hawking's ability to synthesize this difficult subject for people not used to thinking about things like alternate dimensions。 The journey is certainly worth taking for as Hawking says, the reward of understanding the universe may be a glimpse of "the mind of God"。--Therese Littleton, Amazon。com

Reading this is like being in school again。 Some of the topics was mentioned during my school days but not as thorough and in depth as what was written in this book。I always believe that you learn a thing or two about an author when you read their writings。 But reading this book left me more intrigue than usual。 One of the thing I am curious about is, does he believe in God? Or more to be more specific, is he religious? Because he sometimes mention God in this book。 But to be being honest, whatever the answer is, it won't matter。 People are entitled to have their own opinion regarding what they believe。 I only know Stephen Hawking in name and that he is intelligent。 Other than that, nothing。 Maybe I should read his autobiography first, if he has one, or did some research about him。 But it's already too late, I'm done reading。The chapter that I really enjoyed reading is about wormholes, time travel and paradoxes。 Those are really interesting and it made me want to read or research more about that topic。 Overall, I really enjoyed the book。 。。。more

If there is any book that has given me true happiness, it is this book (keeping non-fiction and many fiction books aside)。 Such an amazing piece of work and there is just too much to appreciate。 I enjoyed reading every single thing。 As much as I wanted to read the next page, I didn't want it to finish but we always come to an end just like the Universe hahaha。 But really appreciate all the science/non-science people for their contribution to making this gem and a big salute to Late Mr Stephen Ha If there is any book that has given me true happiness, it is this book (keeping non-fiction and many fiction books aside)。 Such an amazing piece of work and there is just too much to appreciate。 I enjoyed reading every single thing。 As much as I wanted to read the next page, I didn't want it to finish but we always come to an end just like the Universe hahaha。 But really appreciate all the science/non-science people for their contribution to making this gem and a big salute to Late Mr Stephen Hawking without whom such a book wouldn't be possible。 I recommend reading this and gaining a perspective on how tiny we are and how tiny our problems are and what are we in。 ADVICE - READ ONLY IF YOU CAN KEEP UP, DO NOT LEAVE IT HALFWAY THROUGH BECAUSE THE BEAUTY IS WHEN ALL THE THINGS START TO TIE UP TOGETHER。 IF YOU ARE NOT A SCIENCE/REAL FACTS ENTHUSIAST, I WOULD SUGGEST START WITH SOMETHING SMALL AND THEN READ THIS。 :-) 。。。more

The first thing I want to say is that this book is highly saturated。 Do not expect it to be light reading。 You have to submerge into it to keep following the author。 Now I understand why I like reading fiction: plot development intertwines with nature or background description :)The second thing which sounds like the main idea of the book is the following: for now, the questions of science evolution are within the competence of a small group of scientists, while it used to be that of philosopher The first thing I want to say is that this book is highly saturated。 Do not expect it to be light reading。 You have to submerge into it to keep following the author。 Now I understand why I like reading fiction: plot development intertwines with nature or background description :)The second thing which sounds like the main idea of the book is the following: for now, the questions of science evolution are within the competence of a small group of scientists, while it used to be that of philosophers。 It has to change! As the theories become more and more mathematical and complicated, they become more and more distant from the understanding of the general population。 And when those scientists find that grand unified theory that predicts and explains the state of the universe and combines gravitation, relativity into one whole, then we expect the rise of explanations and science-pop books on the topic。 But professor Hawking decided to start earlier and give everything known to the present moment to all willing without unnecessary complications which seem indispensable。 The only formula I came across in the book was Einstein's mass-energy equation。 And I find it pretty awesome that it's actually possible to speak about the universe and the laws acting in it with just this one formula。 And it is in this book that I finally understood what entropy means。 I've come across this term multiple times in multiple books and videos, still, it was slightly ambiguous。 With the explanation that it's the increased disorder or heat in the system, I now get it better。Bravo and thank you, Professor。 。。。more

I'm going to hell for this but I don't really remember what this one was about :D As audiobook, especially sped up it was shorter tan a LOTR extended :D Not leaving major marks in my mind it seems。 There's plenty more from Hawking, will re-visit other iterations like the "Briefer"。 Was brief, for sure。 I'm going to hell for this but I don't really remember what this one was about :D As audiobook, especially sped up it was shorter tan a LOTR extended :D Not leaving major marks in my mind it seems。 There's plenty more from Hawking, will re-visit other iterations like the "Briefer"。 Was brief, for sure。 。。。more

Really well written, and even humorous at times。 There were definitely large portions I didn’t understand fully, but it brought up a lot of interesting information。 It’s a book I plan on reading again in the future once I read more on these topics。

A good book for people who would like to understand physics, however the farther I got in the book the more I got lost。 There are some concepts that are introduced, but not really explained。 String theory for example was suddenly just there and I really couldn't figure out why this theory has any benefit or where it came from。 A good book for people who would like to understand physics, however the farther I got in the book the more I got lost。 There are some concepts that are introduced, but not really explained。 String theory for example was suddenly just there and I really couldn't figure out why this theory has any benefit or where it came from。 。。。more

This is really good。 The best part is that anyone can understand space and time without any problem。

Lots of things to brush up since high school physics class, but nonetheless this was accessible, witty and conveyed a ton of information。

This book is really good, but also an incredibly hard read。 If physics does not interest you, you probably will not finish it。

There was not a single chapter within this book which felt laborious to read。 I was glad to see Stephen Hawking’s humour shine through his explanations, and overall his prose and way with words was really pleasant。 I should say though, I’m unsure whether this book is as novice-friendly as it claims to be。 Although Hawkings doesn’t cover mind boggling territory with every word he writes, I must say that it would be really useful to have some basic, university-level knowledge of physics before div There was not a single chapter within this book which felt laborious to read。 I was glad to see Stephen Hawking’s humour shine through his explanations, and overall his prose and way with words was really pleasant。 I should say though, I’m unsure whether this book is as novice-friendly as it claims to be。 Although Hawkings doesn’t cover mind boggling territory with every word he writes, I must say that it would be really useful to have some basic, university-level knowledge of physics before diving into this read - simply to ensure you’re getting the most out of what he’s trying to say。 Otherwise, the book isn’t too hard to follow, even if you haven’t looked at a physics book since you left school。 。。。more

I just give this 5 stars cause it's the first physics book I ever read and this man made me fall in love with astronomy and physics。It might be hard to understand and I read some sentences 20 times and still not understood them, needed an hour's for 10 pages but I've got the attention span of a tiktok and I gave this book more stars than I've got brain cells。。。hm I just give this 5 stars cause it's the first physics book I ever read and this man made me fall in love with astronomy and physics。It might be hard to understand and I read some sentences 20 times and still not understood them, needed an hour's for 10 pages but I've got the attention span of a tiktok and I gave this book more stars than I've got brain cells。。。hm 。。。more

Masterpiece! The concept of time has always made me curious and this book tries to explain in a way that non-science people too can understand。 Generally, I try to avoid reading books by scientists, but this book was different。 It is well written for the people like us who wants to understand things but finds books written by scientists difficult。Stephen Hawking, you were brilliant with your words!
